Who says you have to be able to see to ski?

New England Regional Ski for Light (NERSFL) is pleased to announce that they will once again be heading to the Craftsbury Outdoor Center in Craftsbury Common, VT for a weekend full of skiing, sharing and learning from January 3-6, 2014.  This marks the 12th consecutive year that the Craftsbury Outdoor Center has hosted a NERSFL ski weekend.

NERSFL strives to promote physical fitness for blind and visually-impaired adults by sponsoring physically demanding sports including cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter and hiking, paddling and tandem bicycling in the summer.  NERSFL trains sighted skiers (guides) to ski alongside blind or visually-impaired skiers (VIPs).  Guides describe the surrounding terrain and give verbal instructions to keep the VIP skier on course.  Guides and VIPs partner together in a unique one-on-one relationship and while they ski together develop a sense of camaraderie, learn from one another, and, most importantly, have fun in a relaxed and supportive environment.

At this year’s Craftsbury event we are expecting 25 to 30 blind and visually-impaired skiers to attend from throughout New England and as far away as California.

NERSFL is a regional affiliate to Ski for Light Inc. (SFL), a nationwide organization whose mission is to enhance the independence and quality of life of blind and visually-impaired adults through a program of cross-country skiing. SFL hosts an annual week-long event at different locations around the US and attracts more than 300 participants from many nations.  Beyond invigorating days of skiing, SFL also offers a variety of cultural and educational special interest sessions and social activities.

The upcoming Craftsbury ski weekend is the embodiment of NERSFL’s mission and vision. It provides an environment of skiing, sharing and learning where participants are empowered to experience new things, acquire new skills and in doing so develop self confidence that will carry over to all aspects of their lives ranging far beyond the ski trails.  After all, as the SFL motto declares, “If I can do this, I CAN do anything”.
